Loke warns of year-round crackdown on overloaded heavy vehicles

Transport Minister Anthony Loke says enforcement against overloaded lorries is continuous, with over 3,500 violations found in a major 2026 operation.

PUTRAJAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke has warned that enforcement against overloaded heavy vehicles is a continuous, year-round effort and not a seasonal campaign.

He stressed that industry players must comply fully with the law or face firm action, countering assumptions that a major operation had concluded.

“Last year, we launched large-scale operations against overloading, and they had a significant impact,” Loke said in his 2026 New Year Address.

“However, some parties assumed enforcement ended last December. So, I want to make it clear that enforcement activities are ongoing at all times.”

The Op Perang Lebih Muatan, conducted from October 14 to December 31 last year, inspected 169,965 heavy vehicles.

A total of 3,563 vehicles were found to be overloaded during that operation.

Authorities issued 6,843 notices to drivers and vehicle owners, along with 4,983 summonses under the Road Transport Act 1987.

Loke warned industry players against prioritising profits by exceeding load limits.

“If violations are detected, firm action will be taken. Do not assume enforcement has been halted or relaxed,” he said.

He added that Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement this year will also strongly emphasise overall road safety.

This includes tackling drunk driving, illegal street racing and improving motorcycle rider safety.

“Enforcement is not only about heavy lorries. Drunk drivers, illegal racers and the safety of motorcyclists must also be addressed seriously and strengthened,” Loke said.

The continuous enforcement aims to ensure safer roads for the public and demonstrate the government’s commitment to transport law.
