Malaysia Airports to deploy shuttle buses and comprehensive plan to address recurring aerotrain reliability problems at KLIA
SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd will implement a comprehensive action plan to address recurring reliability issues with the KL International Airport aerotrain system.
The project will be managed by the Malaysia Airports team in collaboration with contractors, consultants, and an independent technical assessor.
MAHB stated it is developing the plan with active engagement from all relevant parties.
The airport operator will continue working closely with the Land Public Transport Agency and the Ministry of Transport to resolve the issue.
This decision follows a series of aerotrain incidents that prompted MAHB to formally address concerns with contractors Alstom and IJMC-PESTECH Joint Venture.
MAHB demanded immediate corrective action from the contractors regarding the reliability problems.
Preliminary assessments revealed a declining trend in system reliability, particularly involving the vehicle and power distribution systems.
Contractors provided data and assurances that failed to instill sufficient confidence in the aerotrain’s current reliability.
As an immediate measure, MAHB will deploy full shuttle-bus service during off-peak hours between 11.00 pm and 5.00 am daily.
These buses will facilitate planned and additional inspection and rectification works on the aerotrain system.
A concurrent shuttle-bus service will operate alongside the aerotrain from 5.00 am to 11.00 pm to ensure uninterrupted passenger movement.
MAHB stated it is prepared to mobilise extensive resources to provide full shuttle-bus services as required by the comprehensive action plan.
The aerotrains have carried more than 6.55 million passengers since resuming service in July 2025.
The system has operated nearly 95,000 trips since its service resumption earlier this year.
MAHB emphasised that passenger safety and comfort remain its top priority throughout this process.
The company is committed to upholding the highest operational standards while working to restore full confidence in the aerotrain system. – Bernama
