Malaysia may mediate in Sudan’s conflict due to significant investments and peacekeeping experience, with RM74 million already sent to Palestine.
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will consider playing a mediating role in Sudan’s peace efforts according to Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin.
He stated this matter requires detailed discussion since the ongoing conflict affects Malaysia’s interests.
“This is also our priority to see that country return to peace,” he said during the committee-level debate on the Supply Bill 2026.
Mohamad highlighted Malaysia’s experience in mediating conflicts including facilitating peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia.
Earlier, Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli asked whether Malaysia would leverage its OIC position to lead Sudanese peace initiatives.
Sudan’s Ambassador to Malaysia Hassan Abdel Salam Omer described Malaysia as a trusted partner and leading voice for global peace.
Meanwhile, Mohamad confirmed Malaysia has channelled RM74 million in humanitarian aid to Palestine through the Humanitarian Trust Fund.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently announced an additional RM100 million for Gaza reconstruction efforts.
