KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government sees no need to activate an evacuation plan for its citizens in Gulf states despite regional tensions.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated the situation remains under control and does not yet warrant such a measure.
He confirmed Wisma Putra is closely monitoring developments and has established proactive safeguards for Malaysian welfare.
These include a 24-hour operations room and ensured access to consular services in affected countries.
Approximately 29,000 Malaysians are currently in the Gulf region, with about 13,000 registered with embassies.
In Qatar alone, there are 2,007 registered Malaysians, most employed in airline and related sectors.
The government’s immediate focus is assisting Malaysians in transit in Dubai, Oman, Abu Dhabi and Doha.
Mohamad said those already residing in these locations face no issues regarding accommodation or facilities.
Discussions are underway with Lembaga Tabung Haji to utilise its accommodation in Jeddah for affected citizens.
The government will also manage individual cases, including providing shelter at embassy premises for stranded students.
Mohamad expressed hope that umrah operators will take responsibility for their respective pilgrims.
He noted Malaysian Airlines is currently not operating flights to Saudi Arabia despite open airspace.
“This is most likely due to insurance companies raising their premiums, affecting operational viability,” he said.
The government is actively addressing this issue to restore flight connectivity.
