Malaysia sees slight rise in influenza cases, situation remains controlled

The Sun Webdesk

Influenza infection rates rose slightly in ME44 but remain below peak levels, with 43 clusters reported and no new virus mutations detected.

PUTRAJAYA: Influenza infection rates showed a slight increase during the 44th epidemiological week from October 26 to November 1 compared to the previous week.

The Ministry of Health confirmed the situation remains under control despite this minor uptick.

Consultation rates for Influenza-Like Illness cases increased to 8.34% in ME44, up from 8.18% the previous week.

“This rate remains stable and below the peak of 9.68% recorded in ME42,” the ministry stated.

A total of 43 influenza clusters were reported in ME44, rising from 30 clusters in the previous week.

This figure remains significantly lower than the 216 clusters recorded during ME42.

Laboratory analysis through ILI and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection surveillance showed the influenza positive rate increased from 27.6% in ME43 to 37.6% in ME44.

Genome sequencing confirmed no new influenza virus mutations have been detected to date.

The ministry will continue monitoring acute respiratory infection trends nationwide through its surveillance systems.

“Prevention, control and preparedness measures are continuously implemented at all levels,” the statement added.

The MOH urged the public, particularly parents and guardians, to remain alert to respiratory infection symptoms in children.

Immediate medical attention is recommended if children show weakness, loss of appetite, dehydration, prolonged fever, or rapid and difficult breathing. – Bernama
