Malaysia’s NRES ministry is reinforcing its 2018-2030 roadmap to eliminate single-use plastics through circular economy approaches

KOTA BHARU: The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry is strengthening the Malaysia Roadmap Towards Zero Single-Use Plastics 2018–2030 as the country’s strategic guide to gradually reduce plastic pollution.

NRES secretary-general Datuk Dr Ching Thoo Kim said the roadmap emphasises the need to change how society interacts with plastic from excessive use to sustainable management based on recycling and reuse.

He stated the framework not only protects the environment but also opens up new economic opportunities.

Ching urged all parties including government, industry and the public to play active roles in ensuring the zero single-use plastics goal is achieved by 2030.

He made these remarks during his welcoming address at the national-level 2025 National Environment Day celebration in Kota Bharu.

The event was officiated by Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud with Department of Environment director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar also present.

Ching explained that under the circular economy approach for e-waste, the government encourages recovery and recycling of valuable components like copper, gold and silver from used electrical equipment.

He noted this initiative reduces dependence on new natural resources while creating economic opportunities in material recovery and recycling technology industries.

Ching also highlighted the E-Waste Collection Day initiative held nationwide on the last Saturday of each month.

This programme aims to raise public awareness about environmentally friendly e-waste management while providing valuable recyclable materials for local industries.

Ching emphasised that environmental sustainability requires active participation from the public, industry and local communities in reducing pollution impacts.

Wan Abdul Latiff commended the Kelantan government for allocating RM27.5 million for various conservation and environmental programmes.

He stated this allocation strengthens the state’s commitment to the national sustainability agenda.

Mohd Nassuruddin confirmed the allocation will fund green projects and ecological initiatives at the state level.

These initiatives include forest conservation, waste management, public awareness campaigns, and environmental education programmes. – Bernama
