Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announces a nationwide roadshow and expanded outreach for the Safe Internet Campaign 2.0 to protect children and families online.
PUTRAJAYA: The Communications Ministry will intensify its Safe Internet Campaign 2.0 next year to bolster online security, particularly for children and families.
Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the campaign’s first phase this year exceeded its target, reaching nearly 8,500 schools and over 400,000 participants.
He has directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to forge collaborations with various parties, including the MADANI Community.
“We want to involve all in the MADANI Community to become agents of communication delivering the same message, which is ensuring the Internet is safe,” Fahmi said at a ministry event.
He added that parents share the duty of ensuring their children’s safety online.
The ministry will also launch a nationwide internet safety mega roadshow in February to coincide with World Safer Internet Day.
Fahmi noted that criminals involved in child sexual crimes, scams and online gambling have migrated en masse to social media.
To combat this, the government has strengthened the legal framework by defining new criminal offences.
“Cyberbullying has been amended in the Penal Code, which now defines physical bullying or cyberbullying as an offence,” he stated.
“Doxxing – the dissemination of someone’s personal information with the intention of causing fear or intimidation – is now an offence.”
This effort aligns with the enforcement of new acts like the Online Safety Act and the Anti-Bullying Bill 2025.
It also involves the implementation of the Deeming Provision under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
From January 1, 2026, major social media platforms with over eight million users in Malaysia will be automatically registered and regulated.
“This means, if we cooperate with other ministries, departments and enforcement agencies, our Internet, insya-Allah, will be safer by next year,” Fahmi said.
He expressed confidence that these combined measures will make the internet safer for all Malaysians.
