Malaysia to set up gig workers council and tribunal by 2026

Malaysia’s HR minister announces a Gig Consultative Council, tribunal, and new national policy to empower the country’s employment ecosystem

PUTRAJAYA: The establishment of a Gig Consultative Council and a dedicated Gig Workers Tribunal are key priorities for empowering Malaysia’s employment landscape.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said these bodies will serve as a fair and efficient governance and dispute resolution mechanism for gig work realities.

He also highlighted the drafting of the National Human Resources Policy 2026-2035 as another major focus to ensure worker welfare.

“My main emphasis is to ensure that the welfare of workers is always a priority,” Ramanan said at a press conference after a briefing with his ministry’s senior management.

The policy aims to safeguard workers in terms of protection, safety, employment opportunities and skills development.

An interim team is being formed to ensure the Gig Consultative Council is successfully established by the first quarter of 2026.

Other ministry priorities include labour law reform and implementing the National Action Plan on Forced Labour 2.0 (2026–2030).

Ramanan also mentioned the planned introduction of a multi-tier levy mechanism.

He expressed his commitment to working with ministry staff to ensure policies truly benefit the people.

“The Human Resources Ministry functions for all Malaysian workers, irrespective of race, background or employment sector,” he added.

Ramanan thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the trust placed in him to lead the ministry.

He also expressed gratitude to former minister Steven Sim for his efforts and initiatives during his term. – Bernama
