Malaysian scouts to expand community programme to Borneo next year

Scouts Association of Malaysia will expand its community-based programme to Borneo next year to reach students unable to join school-level scouting activities.

MELAKA: The Scouts Association of Malaysia will expand its community-based scouting programme to Borneo next year.

Chief Scout Maj Gen (Rtd) Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Zin Bidin said the move aims to provide opportunities for children and teenagers unable to join the movement at school level.

Some institutions currently cap the number of students allowed to participate in scouting activities.

“Through this approach, students who cannot join the school-based scouts can participate at the community level instead,” he told reporters after attending the Scouts Association of Malaysia Investiture Ceremony 2025.

He explained participants will undergo structured training and modules enabling them to earn badges before being commissioned as King’s Scouts.

A total of 569 individuals received awards at the ceremony officiated by Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam.

National Scouts Council vice-president Datuk Zamani Tambichek received the Star of the Paddy Spirit (Silver).

Deputy National Chief Commissioner Ahmad Sabri Saad received the association’s second-highest award.

Dr Mohd Zin said scouting activities nurture leadership, discipline and character among young people.

He added these values help prevent participants from engaging in unhealthy activities such as bullying.

Participants are taught to uphold moral integrity from a young age through the movement’s positive values. – Bernama
