Malaysia’s affordable homes exceed 500,000 target under MADANI government

The government has delivered over 511,000 affordable homes, surpassing its 12MP target, and revived 1,333 sick housing projects nationwide.

JOHOR BAHRU: The MADANI government has exceeded its target of building 500,000 affordable homes under the 12th Malaysia Plan.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that 511,544 units have been provided as of September 30 this year.

This figure covers completed homes, those under construction, and projects with planning approval.

Nga said this historic achievement resulted from close federal-state cooperation and private developer partnerships.

“The MADANI government has become the first administration to make history by not only meeting, but surpassing the target,” he told a press conference.

He credited the success to housing reforms announced by the ministry in November.

Key mechanisms include the Electronic Sales and Purchase Agreement and the Housing Integrated Management System.

Nga expressed confidence these reforms will eliminate abandoned housing projects by 2030.

The ministry has also revived 1,333 sick and abandoned projects involving nearly 160,000 units over three years.

Nga noted the national homeownership rate among families now stands at 76.5%.

He linked this to strengthening social and economic stability across the country.

In a separate development, the ministry approved RM82 million for Johor’s first Program Residensi Rakyat.

This integrated transit housing project for youths will be built in Larkin.

It will be managed by the Johor Housing Development Corporation.

Rent for a three-bedroom unit is set at RM600, compared to the typical market rate of RM2,000.

One-bedroom units will be rented at RM200 to assist newly employed or married youths.

The project is currently in the tender process.

Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year.
