Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s proposed term limits and separation of powers are hailed as key steps to bolster Malaysia’s democratic system and prevent power monopolies.
PUTRAJAYA: Institutional reform measures announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have been described as a vital step in strengthening the country’s democratic system.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the proposals are critical for establishing stronger checks and balances.
He said they prevent the concentration of power in key positions.
The measures include limiting the Prime Minister’s term to two terms or ten years.
They also involve separating the powers of the Attorney-General and the public prosecutor.
“I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement to implement these important institutional reforms,” Nga said in a statement.
He added that the government remains committed to realising an institutional reform agenda.
This agenda aims to strengthen democracy, the rule of law and good governance.
Nga also highlighted the planned tabling of the Freedom of Information Bill 2026.
This aims to strengthen public trust and transparency by providing broader access to government information.
The Act is expected to complement the role of the Malaysian Media Council.
It will help nurture a society able to make informed decisions, he added.
Nga noted the Prime Minister’s address was a continuation of earlier achievements over three years of administration.
These include the Parliamentary Services Act 2025, which grants Parliament autonomy.
The government also introduced the Government Service Efficiency Commitment Act 2025.
This aims to reduce bureaucratic red tape by at least 25% within three years and strengthen accountability.
Another key reform is the Government Procurement Act 2025.
It seeks to enhance transparency, integrity and efficiency in public procurement processes.
Nga also highlighted the automatic granting of citizenship to children born overseas to Malaysian mothers.
He called this a progressive step that uplifts women and gender equality.
“Clearly, the reforms being vigorously carried out not only fulfil manifesto promises,” he said.
He added they will raise levels of transparency, accountability and integrity in administrative and legal systems.
He urged all Malaysians to stand with the government.
This is so Malaysia can continue moving towards excellence on the world stage.
