MCMC and X to meet on Grok AI ban and online safety rules

MCMC and X will meet Jan 21 to discuss the Grok AI ban and proposals to restrict social media access for users under 16 in Malaysia.

CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and social media platform X will hold a meeting next Wednesday to discuss online safety issues.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the discussion will include the Grok artificial intelligence application.

He cited concerns about its potential misuse in generating pornographic and explicit content that violates national laws.

“We hope X can make several improvements to restrict the misuse of explicit content which violates the country’s laws,” Fahmi told reporters.

He added that X has so far given good cooperation and is open to holding discussions.

The MCMC ordered a temporary ban on access to Grok for users in Malaysia on January 11.

The commission said the action followed repeated misuse of the AI to generate obscene material and non-consensual manipulated images.

It is also considering legal action against X Corp and xAI LLC for failing to ensure user safety regarding Grok.

Separately, Fahmi said all social media platforms had begun discussions with the MCMC on proposals to limit social media use to those aged 16 and above.

Discussions are currently focused on the technical issues and implementation mechanism, which is still under review.

“We expect its implementation to take place in the coming months,” he said.

Fahmi added that several other platforms not initially targeted have voluntarily stated their readiness to be involved.

He viewed this as a good effort by platforms to understand government efforts for a safer internet space, especially for children.
