Melaka plans to amend its livestock enactment and introduce mandatory QR codes for cattle and buffalo to curb straying and enhance public safety.
MELAKA: The state government will table amendments to its livestock enactment at the next legislative assembly session to strengthen enforcement against stray animals.
State executive councillor Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said the goal is to ensure farmers manage livestock responsibly, reducing road accidents and crop damage.
“The amendments will specify penalties and fines according to the severity of the offence,” he told reporters in Merlimau today.
Penalties will range from cases involving property damage to incidents causing serious injury or fatalities.
Muhamad Akmal emphasised the initiative aims to educate farmers, not punish them, about their responsibility for public safety.
He added that from March, all cattle and buffalo in the state must be tagged with QR codes.
The government will cover the full tagging cost for the first six months as a grace period for farmers to register.
After this period, farmers will bear the cost themselves, and stray livestock found without tags may be impounded.
The councillor spoke after officiating the state-level Agro MADANI Sales Carnival, also attended by FAMA director-general Abdul Rashid Bahri.
