Muhyiddin steps down as PN chairman effective Jan 1

Muhyiddin Yassin announces resignation as Perikatan Nasional chairman from Jan 1, 2026, after five years, amid rising PAS-Bersatu tensions

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has announced his resignation from the post, effective Jan 1, 2026.

In a media statement issued today, Muhyiddin said the decision came after five years of leading PN since its formation.

“I would like to express my gratitude to all PN leaders who have given me their full support throughout my tenure,” he said, while also wishing the coalition’s leadership and component parties continued success.

Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president and a former prime minister, did not elaborate on the reasons for his resignation nor name a successor.

However, his decision comes amid growing internal strain within PN, particularly following recent political developments in Perlis, where tensions between PAS and Bersatu have intensified.

As of press time, PN has yet to announce an interim chairman or outline the process for appointing a new leader.
