Nine workers suffered breathing difficulties after inhaling ammonia gas while cleaning a tank at a Terengganu animal-food processing plant.
CHUKAI: Nine factory workers were hospitalised after inhaling toxic gas during maintenance work in Kerteh yesterday.
The Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department said the incident occurred at an animal-food processing factory in the Kerteh Biopolymer Park.
All victims, aged between 23 and 40, were cleaning a tank when they suddenly experienced breathing difficulties.
They are believed to have inhaled ammonia gas, according to initial investigations by the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) team.
Zone 2 chief Rohaya Jamil said other factory workers rescued the nine individuals before emergency services arrived.
All victims were initially taken to the Paka Health Clinic for treatment.
Six were subsequently referred to Dungun Hospital for further care, while three others were allowed to return home.
The fire department received an emergency call at 6.51 pm and dispatched 18 firefighters, including the Hazmat team.
