No tsunami threat to Malaysia from moderate Philippines quake

MetMalaysia confirms a 5.3 magnitude quake in the Philippine Islands region poses no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: A moderate earthquake has struck the Philippine Islands region with no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported the 5.3 magnitude tremor occurred at 12.13 pm today.

Its epicentre was located at coordinates 7.3 degrees north and 127.1 degrees east at a depth of 65 kilometres.

The quake was situated 136 kilometres southeast of Bislig, Philippines.

MetMalaysia confirmed the seismic event does not pose any tsunami threat to Malaysia.

This follows a stronger 6.4 magnitude earthquake reported in the same region earlier at 11.03 am.
