MMEA Pahang warns maritime community to prioritise safety during northeast monsoon with 10 operational assets ready for deployment
KUANTAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency in Pahang has reminded the public, especially the maritime community, to stay alert and prioritise safety ahead of the northeast monsoon season expected from November to March 2026.
The monsoon typically brings winds of 40 to 50 knots and continuous heavy rain, increasing risks of capsized boats, missing fishermen and drowning incidents.
State Maritime director First Admiral Mazlan Mat Rejab confirmed the agency remains on high alert with 10 operational assets ready for deployment.
These assets include two offshore patrol vessels, one medium-class vessel, two small-class vessels and five interceptor boats.
He stated all assets maintain full readiness for immediate deployment in enforcement and rescue operations.
MMEA also stands prepared to conduct medical evacuation missions in state waters, particularly around Pulau Tioman.
Victims would be transported to the Teluk Gading Maritime Post in Rompin following medical evacuations.
Mazlan urged the maritime community to implement preventive measures and avoid sea travel during bad weather.
He advised the public to postpone recreational activities on islands and beaches to prevent drowning or stranding incidents.
Boat operators and seafarers received reminders to check weather forecasts before sailing.
They must ensure vessels remain seaworthy and properly equipped with life jackets and communication devices.
Mazlan emphasised the importance of informing family or friends about sailing routes before departure.
The public should keep emergency contact numbers readily available for maritime emergencies.
Emergency contacts include the general 999 number and the Pahang Maritime Operations Centre at 09-5717345 or 7368.
These numbers should be used to report any maritime emergencies during the monsoon season. – Bernama
