Penang plans to double its STEM programmes in 2026, aiming to build a skilled workforce for its 500+ MNCs and 7,000+ SMEs.
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will double its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes in 2026 to strengthen future talent development.
Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo said the commitment follows discussions with stakeholders including Tech Dome Penang and Penang Science Cluster.
“The year 2026 is very important for us,” he told a press conference.
He stated that grassroots programmes need strengthening as early exposure lays a foundation for the skilled manpower required by the state’s industrial sector.
In 2025 alone, 110 STEM programmes involving 236,000 students were conducted.
That figure is expected to increase significantly next year through coordinated efforts across all state agencies.
Jagdeep explained Penang’s technology sector involves over 500 multinational companies and more than 7,000 small and medium enterprises.
These companies require a highly skilled workforce to remain globally competitive.
The state will also seek federal financial support to expand the STEM programme under the 13th Malaysia Plan. – Bernama
