Penang’s 13MP strategy for NCER emphasises value creation, high-value industries, and balanced regional expansion, building on strong 12MP achievements
PENANG: The 13th Malaysia Plan direction for the Northern Corridor Economic Region in Penang will focus on an economy based on value creation, high-value growth industries, and balanced regional expansion.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that Penang remains the leader in the regional industrial ecosystem network for the semiconductor sector.
This leadership is supported by the existing network in Kulim, Kedah, Ipoh, and the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park which is currently under planning.
He highlighted that infrastructure upgrades will continuously improve connectivity and competitiveness for Penang and the NCER.
These projects include the upgrading of Penang Port, the expansion of Penang International Airport, and the construction of the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit.
Additionally, the upgrading of the Juru-Sungai Dua Expressway will serve as a catalyst for regional development, especially for archaeology-based tourism.
Under Rolling Plan 1 of the 13MP, two new projects involving talent development have been planned to realise investment and economic growth in strategic sectors.
Another project focuses on the development of the supply chain ecosystem.
Chow confirmed that several extension projects will continue, including the NCER Technology and Innovation Centre and the development of Penang Durian Valley@Relau.
He added that NCER achievements under the 12th Malaysia Plan for Penang showed very good progress.
In terms of gross domestic product value, Penang’s achievements amounted to RM121.49 billion with a 45% contribution to the NCER.
Investments realised reached RM152.5 billion with a 47% contribution.
Jobs realised were 62,356, representing 27% of the total, while household income reached RM7,386. – Bernama
