Aceh residents express gratitude to Malaysia and PM Anwar for humanitarian aid after devastating floods that killed nearly 1,000 people
ACEH: Residents of Desa Pante Lhong in Aceh have expressed their appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the people of Malaysia for their concern and assistance following recent major floods.
Village head Murizal K said the support had provided a morale boost as residents work to recover from severe destruction.
“Especially to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the people of Malaysia who have shown concern for us, it has restored our spirit and readiness to resume our daily activities,” he said.
He expressed deepest gratitude for the assistance provided in the form of medicines and food supplies.
Murizal also appealed for continued assistance, noting the recovery process was expected to take a long time.
Severe floods and landslides hit three regions in Sumatra on November 22 following prolonged heavy rain and Tropical Storm Senyar.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency reported that as of December 10, the death toll had reached 969, with 252 people still missing.
The disaster damaged about 158,000 houses across 52 affected regions.
The Malaysian Consulate General in Medan, NGOs and the private sector sent humanitarian aid including food, basic necessities, healthcare personnel and medicines.
On December 11, the Prime Minister’s Office announced a contribution of RM500 each to affected Indonesian students studying in Malaysia. – Bernama
