Anwar pushes for swift passage of two-term PM limit bill

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urges expedited passage of a bill limiting the PM’s tenure to two terms, applying the law to himself first.

KUALA LANGAT: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a bill limiting the prime minister’s tenure to two terms to be expedited.

He said a maximum of 10 years is sufficient for any leader to implement reforms before making way for new leadership.

“Anyone who sincerely wishes to serve the country, I think 10 years is enough,” Anwar said after Friday prayers.

He stressed the law must begin with him, stating, “Yes, it starts with me. I cannot make a law for others alone.”

The proposal is seen as part of broader institutional reforms to strengthen democratic governance.

Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said had previously indicated the bill would be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

On separate allegations of misconduct linked to former minister Rafizi Ramli, Anwar reiterated the government’s consistent stance.

“We must be consistent. Regardless of who is involved, if there are allegations, investigate them transparently,” he said.

He welcomed any allegation backed by evidence and subjected to transparent investigation.

Anwar also cautioned the public against being swayed by baseless accusations, especially during Ramadan.

Rafizi has previously denied involvement in an alleged RM2.5 billion corruption case linked to a national energy project.

In another development, Anwar said he would receive Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong for an informal meeting.

He described the visit as a friendly call to discuss bilateral interests and joint project progress.

“It is an opportunity to briefly discuss the interests of both countries,” Anwar said, adding he had invited Wong for a ‘buka puasa’ meal.
