Culvert failure causes sinkhole on Melaka federal route

A collapsed culvert caused a 10m sinkhole on Federal Route FT033 in Melaka, with RM2.5 million repairs expected to take two months

MELAKA: A collapsed culvert has been identified as the likely cause of a sinkhole that appeared on Federal Route FT033 last night.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed the initial Public Works Department report findings after inspecting the site today.

“We will examine the culvert structure along this road,” Nanta said.

“It’s also possible that the culvert on the opposite side of the road is facing similar issues.”

The sinkhole measures approximately 10 metres in length and 5 metres in width.

No accidents were reported despite the road damage occurring at a busy section heading towards Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.

The Works Ministry confirmed the structural failure involved a 1.8 by 1.8 metre culvert extending 40 metres in length.

Immediate safety measures include warning signs, traffic diversions, and lane closures spanning 300 metres in both directions.

Permanent repairs will involve excavating the affected area to a depth of 10 metres and installing temporary sheet piles.

The damaged concrete culvert will be replaced with soil backfilled and compacted before road surface restoration.

Repair work is expected to take approximately two months depending on soil conditions and weather factors.

The estimated cost for comprehensive repairs stands at around RM2.5 million.

Nanta separately revealed that 145 road locations nationwide have been affected by various disasters.

This includes 63 federal roads and 82 state roads impacted by flooding, landslides, and other damage. – Bernama
