DBKL to impose RM2,000 fines for littering ahead of VM2026

Kuala Lumpur City Hall will intensify anti-littering enforcement from January 1, with fines up to RM2,000 and community service for offenders.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will intensify enforcement against littering and spitting from January 1.

Offenders face compound fines of up to RM2,000 and will be ordered to perform more than 12 hours of community service over six months.

The operations are part of preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) and will focus on tourist hotspots.

DBKL’s Health and Environment Department director Dr Nor Halizam Ismail said the aim is to curb habits that tarnish the country’s image.

“Our aim is not merely to punish, but also to educate the public to be more disciplined and to respect the shared public spaces,” she said on Bernama TV’s Apa Khabar Malaysia programme.

Four litter-free zones have been designated in Jalan Bukit Bintang, Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Tun Perak and the Brickfields commercial area.

DBKL will also maintain strict cleanliness standards at approximately 7,450 food premises and public toilets.

Premises owners and contractors found non-compliant will face action.

Nor Halizam urged the public to play their part in keeping the city clean, as people’s behaviour reflects the country’s image.

Separately, she announced the ‘I LITE U’ event as the curtain-raiser for VM2026.

The launch will be held on January 3 at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

The programme, a collaboration between DBKL and several ministries, will feature a parade, urban lighting projects, and cultural performances.

Several roads around the capital will be closed on January 1 for a full rehearsal and again on the launch day from 6 pm to midnight.

The affected roads are Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Raja Sultan, Jalan Pudu and Jalan Sultan Ismail.

The public is encouraged to use public transport to ease congestion and attend the celebrations.
