PERHILITAN confirms wild elephant attack killed logging worker at Gua Musang plantation, with 64 conflict elephants relocated since 2023
GUA MUSANG: The Kelantan Department of Wildlife and National Parks confirmed a logging worker found dead near workers’ quarters was attacked by a wild Elephas maximus elephant.
PERHILITAN director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the department launched an investigation after receiving a report around 9 am yesterday.
PERHILITAN staff and police visited the scene at 9.30 am within the Alam Jaya Industri Sdn Bhd plantation clearing area in Lebir Permanent Forest Reserve.
“Investigation results showed wildlife tracks confirming the victim was attacked by the elephant species,” he stated in an official release.
Mohamad Hafid noted PERHILITAN had never previously received wildlife conflict complaints from the Alam Jaya Industri plantation.
The plantation area and workers’ quarters were newly established by the company according to PERHILITAN.
PERHILITAN has captured and relocated 64 conflict elephants across Kelantan from 2023 through 2025.
“Wild elephants causing frequent human-elephant conflict originate from the Lebir Forest Reserve group estimated at thirty individuals,” he explained.
Elephants from this group regularly cause conflicts in villages including Kampung Belia, Kampung Miak, and Kampung Pasir Linggi.
Additional affected areas include Kampung Rahmat, Kampung Sungai Bayu, and Kampung Sungai Lakit.
The conflict extends to Kampung Kenangan and Kampung Mutiara according to PERHILITAN records. – Bernama
