JBPM saved 34 people from a flooded kindergarten and a baby from a caregiver’s home in Johor Bahru after heavy rains caused flash floods
JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) rescued 35 victims, including 19 babies, from flash floods in two separate incidents here today.
Operations Commander Senior Fire Officer II KUP Zakaria Mohamed said 34 people were trapped at the Umiku Sayang Kindergarten and Childcare Centre in Kampung Mohd Amin.
The department received an emergency call at 4.26 pm and dispatched a team from the Larkin Fire and Rescue Station.
The rescue team confirmed 18 infants, 10 children, five teachers and a cook were stranded inside the flooded premises.
“The PKO then acted to evacuate the victims using rescue boats, assisted by four members of the Royal Malaysian Police,” Zakaria said in a statement.
In a separate incident, the Kempas Fire and Rescue Station rescued a five-month-old baby girl from her caregiver’s flooded house in Kampung Pasir.
Senior Fire Officer I Wan Nor Afandi Wan Yusoff said his team successfully retrieved the infant.
The baby was subsequently handed over safely to her mother. – Bernama
