Flood situation worsens in Sarawak, Melaka fully recovers

Flood victims in Sarawak surge to 791, while Melaka recovers fully and Johor sees a slight improvement with 136 evacuees remaining.

KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Sarawak worsened significantly this afternoon, while Melaka has fully recovered.

The number of flood victims in Sarawak rose sharply to 791 people from 204 families as of 4 pm, up from 348 people this morning.

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said six relief centres remain active in several areas around Kuching.

Affected areas include Taman Desa Wira, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru and Kampung Sungai Batu.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Melaka has fully recovered after the relief centre at SK Parit Penghulu in Jasin was closed.

All 36 victims from eight families were allowed to return to their respective homes at 2 pm today.

In Johor, the situation showed a slight improvement with the number of flood victims falling.

The Segamat district now has 136 people from 37 families, down from 159 people this morning.

State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) chairman Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman said five relief centres are still in operation.

He said two rivers in Segamat remain above the danger level.

Sungai Muar at Buloh Kasap recorded a reading of 9.17 metres and Sungai Tekam Jetty was at 4.06 metres.

Two roads were also fully closed due to flood-related incidents.

Jalan Felda Tenggaroh 3 in Mersing is closed following a landslide.

The Kesang-Sungai Rambai Bridge in Tangkak is closed due to structural damage.
