Former Chief Justice receives honorary doctorate at UM convocation

Sultan Nazrin conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws on Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and appointed new UM Pro-Chancellor at the 65th convocation.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws upon former Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat at Universiti Malaya’s 65th convocation ceremony.

The Sultan of Perak, presiding as Chancellor, honoured Tun Tengku Maimun for her service and contributions to the nation.

Tun Tengku Maimun, a UM alumna, made history as Malaysia’s first woman appointed as Chief Justice.

Sultan Nazrin also awarded the title of Professor Emeritus to several distinguished academics across various fields.

Honoured in clinical and scientific disciplines were Prof Dr Khoo Ee Ming (Family Medicine), Prof Dr Phrabhakaran Nambiar (Forensic Odontology and Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology), Prof Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof (Virology), and Prof Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud (Epidemiology and Health Informatics).

The title was also conferred upon Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Zambri Zainuddin in Astronomy and Islamic Astronomy, and Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Hidayat Buang in Contemporary Islamic Law.

Earlier, Sultan Nazrin announced the appointment of Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini as UM’s Pro-Chancellor.

In his royal address, he advised graduates to wisely manage their success and remain humble while upholding moral values.

His Royal Highness emphasised the critical importance of stewarding success with prudence, particularly when it is sudden.

He noted that those who adeptly leverage achievements as a foundation for further accomplishment are truly blessed.

“Become individuals who are courteous and well-mannered, trustworthy, honest, sincere and act with integrity,” he urged graduates.

“Use knowledge as a guiding light for your life’s journey, ensuring you avoid darkness,” Sultan Nazrin added.

He encouraged using wisdom to help build a world that is more just, peaceful, prosperous and humane.

Sultan Nazrin congratulated the university community for their commitment, which placed UM at 58th position in the QS World University Rankings.

This convocation, running from November 29 to December 10, involves 22 sessions celebrating 11,356 graduates.

This cohort is the largest in UM’s 120-year history, comprising 686 PhD graduates and 5,171 Master’s and Postgraduate Education Diploma graduates.

The ceremony also honours 4,127 Bachelor’s degree graduates and 1,372 Advanced Diploma, Executive Diploma, and Diploma graduates. – Bernama
