A new programme will help taxi drivers replace old vehicles with safer, more presentable and suitable cars for public transport
PUTRAJAYA: The government is developing a separate vehicle renewal programme specifically for taxi drivers, with details expected to be finalised and announced by February, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today.
Speaking at the launch of the Matching Grant Programme for the Replacement of Old Vehicles, Loke said the initiative is currently being prepared by the Transport Ministry’s secretary-general, with discussions ongoing with relevant stakeholders.
Loke said the government also plans to introduce an initiative aimed at refreshing the appearance and condition of taxis, particularly older vehicles that no longer meet public expectations in terms of safety, comfort and presentation.
“We want to help taxi drivers as well. We will provide guidance and introduce a mechanism to replace old vehicles with newer ones that are more presentable, affordable and suitable for public transport use,” he said.
“The taxi programme is still being detailed with the relevant parties and will be launched in due course,” he said.
Loke said the planned initiative will be targeted specifically at taxi drivers, particularly those operating conventional taxis, many of whom continue to use vehicles that are more than 20 years old.
“There are still many conventional taxis using very old vehicles, including some that are over 20 years old. That is the group we want to help renew their vehicles,” he said.
Further details will be announced once preparations are completed, he added.
