Govt to establish ombudsman agency to handle public complaints

The new Ombudsman Malaysia will manage public complaints on maladministration and misconduct, with a bill to be tabled in early 2026.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will establish Ombudsman Malaysia as a central agency to manage and resolve public complaints.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the agency will have a broad mandate covering maladministration, misconduct, whistleblower protection and freedom of information.

He said the establishment affirms the MADANI government’s commitment to strengthening citizens’ rights and upholding public sector integrity.

The Ombudsman Malaysia Bill is scheduled to be tabled in parliament in early 2026.

Anwar announced the decision following a meeting of the Special Cabinet Committee on National Governance (JKKTN) in Putrajaya.

He said the meeting reached several key agreements on policy and legislative reforms to enhance government administration.

The government also emphasised improving corporate compliance for companies managing public funds.

This includes proposals for new legislation to regulate government-owned enterprises and subsidiaries of statutory bodies.

Anwar said these decisions reflect a firm commitment to driving institutional reforms holistically.

The aim is to strengthen public and investor confidence in the transparency of national administration.
