Indonesian teacher gets six years, caning for student assault

An Indonesian religious teacher in Kuala Lumpur was sentenced to six years in prison and five strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old student.

KUALA LUMPUR: An Indonesian religious teacher was sentenced to six years in prison and five strokes of the cane for physically sexually assaulting a male student.

Sessions Court Judge Mohd Kafli Che Ali handed down the sentence after Kumpul, 40, pleaded guilty to the charge.

The offence was committed against an 11-year-old boy in a Wangsa Maju religious school teachers’ room in February 2025.

Judge Mohd Kafli ordered the new sentence to begin after Kumpul completes an existing eight-year prison term.

Kumpul had previously been sentenced to eight years and six strokes of the cane on January 5 for two other counts of physical sexual assault.

During mitigation, the unrepresented teacher apologised and stated he has five sons to support.

He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Shakira Aliana Alias prosecuted the case.
