Ipoh City Council will temporarily reopen the Tun Abdul Razak Bridge for the Thaipusam festival from Jan 28 to Feb 2, despite ongoing repairs
IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) will temporarily reopen the Tun Abdul Razak Bridge for the Thaipusam festival.
The bridge, which is currently undergoing major repairs, will be accessible for the celebrations from January 28 to February 2.
Ipoh mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah said permission to use the route is granted specifically for the festival and is subject to certain conditions.
“MBI is aware of the needs of users of the bridge route for the Thaipusam festival, which involves kavadi processions and individuals for the completion of the ceremony,” he said in a statement.
He also announced that the bridge repair completion date has been extended from January 6 to February 6, 2026.
The extension was made to accommodate the Thaipusam festival and due to heavy, unpredictable rainy weather in November and December last year.
Zamakhshari said the project involves opening and demolishing the original bridge structure, which directly impacts traffic and local community activities.
He stated that MBI prioritises safety, work quality, and compliance with technical specifications.
The mayor assured that the extension is a necessary step to ensure road user safety and the quality of the bridge construction.
All efforts are being made to minimise public disruption throughout the duration of the work, he added.
