JAKIM to summon Muslim over involvement in interfaith water ceremony

JAKIM will call up a Muslim individual suspected of involvement in an interfaith water ceremony programme for an explanation

PUTRAJAYA: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) will summon a Muslim individual suspected of involvement in an “Interfaith Water Ceremony” programme.

Its director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee (pic) confirmed the individual is not a JAKIM officer.

He said the department also met with the owner of a Facebook account who disclosed the Muslim involvement.

“This matter is being examined seriously by JAKIM,” he said in a statement.

Sirajuddin said JAKIM is working with state religious authorities and relevant agencies for a comprehensive assessment.

“JAKIM remains committed to preserving the sanctity of the Islamic faith,” he added.

He urged anyone with information to lodge an official report with the police and state Islamic authorities.

A Facebook post had earlier published an article titled ‘Muslim Terlibat Dalam Dakyah Sesat Interfaith Water Ceremony’.

The post claimed a church conducted the ceremony involving joint prayer with leaders of other religions during a festival.

The Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department later clarified the cited event occurred seven years ago at a Seberang Jaya hotel.

It stated the programme was officially reported and covered by local media at the time.

The news coverage then focused on celebrating married couples from various ethnic backgrounds
