Jalan Tun Sardon remains closed after rockfall, reopening delayed

Jalan Tun Sardon in Penang stays shut for slope clearing and monitoring after a rockfall, with the closure likely extended until October 31.

GEORGE TOWN: The P14 route of Jalan Tun Sardon remains closed to all vehicles following a rockfall.

The Public Works Department is clearing debris and monitoring the slope before reopening the road.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said JKR conducted an inspection today after several boulders fell due to loose soil.

“The slope collapse on Jalan Tun Sardon occurred after continuous rain for two to three days, causing several slopes there to become unstable and collapse,” he said.

Jalan Tun Sardon connects Paya Terubong to Balik Pulau and was scheduled to reopen at 6 pm today.

It has been closed since 6 pm last Thursday due to a landslip believed caused by incessant rain.

Zairil said the closure is now expected to be extended until October 31 based on JKR’s assessment.

He noted that Jalan Persekutuan FT006 near Titi Kerawang has been partially reopened for light vehicles only.

Heavy vehicles such as lorries and buses remain prohibited from using that route.

“The federal government has also approved an emergency work allocation to repair the slope in the area,” he added. – Bernama
