KTMB ends Southern Express train service after nine years, replacing it with eight daily ETS trips to JB Sentral for a more efficient travel experience.
KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad will terminate its Southern Express train service from January 1.
The service, which has operated for nine years on the Gemas-JB Sentral-Gemas route, is being halted as part of a planning realignment.
This move aligns with the progress of the Gemas-Johor Bahru Electrified Double-Tracking Project.
“This step also aims to ensure the continuity of a more efficient, integrated service focused on the passenger travel experience,” KTMB said in a statement.
Passenger travel in the southern sector will be strengthened by the full operation of the Electric Train Service to JB Sentral.
Eight daily ETS services will begin from January 1.
“With the completion of this ETS service, passengers will now enjoy a more modern, user-friendly, and environmentally friendly journey,” the statement added.
The Ekspres Rakyat Timuran service for the JB Sentral-Tumpat route will continue operating as usual.
The Shuttle Timuran service also remains available as an alternative for the Gemas-Tumpat route.
KTMB Chief Technical Officer Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin expressed appreciation to all loyal Southern Express passengers.
“Every journey, memory, and nostalgia shared with the Southern Express will always be etched in the memories of all KTMB staff,” he said.
Passengers are advised to check the latest schedules via KTMB’s official channels.
They should plan journeys in advance through official ticket platforms or the KTMB Call Centre at 03-9779 1200.
