Landslide displaces eight families at Gombak Orang Asli village

Heavy rain triggered a landslide at Kampung Orang Asli Batu 12, damaging eight houses and forcing 47 residents to evacuate to a relief centre

GOMBAK: An elderly woman had a terrifying escape when a landslide caused her kitchen wall to collapse last Wednesday.

Halimah Yunos, 71, said the incident occurred around 7 pm after continuous heavy rain caused soil movement along a water channel.

“As soon as I realised the kitchen floor had collapsed, I called my son to help move items before we headed to the relief centre,” she said.

She noted that soil movement had been detected since November 25, but the landslide made her home unsafe.

Another resident, Mahadil Ali, 55, said this was the first major landslide since the settlement was established in 1991.

He claimed water and construction debris from the nearby East Coast Rail Link project contributed to the instability.

A representative from the Gombak MP’s Office said the relocation of eight families was coordinated with multiple agencies.

“All affected residents will remain at the relief centre until a safer resettlement area is identified,” Hazmimi Johar said.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said an emergency call was received at 7.10 pm.

Deputy director Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said the landslide was about 7.6 metres high and covered 100 square feet.

The incident affected eight houses, but no casualties were reported. – Bernama
