Malaysian aid group MAHAR calls for international action as Sudan faces famine, mass displacement and hospital attacks in ongoing conflict.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (MAHAR) has urged Malaysians and the global community to raise their voices in solidarity with Sudan’s people.
MAHAR president Jismi Johari stated that Sudan’s situation is deteriorating rapidly while the world remains largely silent.
“We believe, we cannot be silent when millions are suffering,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
The conflict between Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces has left the nation in ruins according to MAHAR.
More than 12 million Sudanese have been internally displaced while another four million have fled across borders.
Nearly 25 million Sudanese now face severe hunger with famine already reported in Darfur and Kordofan regions.
Hospitals and health facilities have been destroyed or attacked leaving millions without access to clean water.
Cholera outbreaks and other deadly diseases continue claiming lives as humanitarian assistance remains critically underfunded.
Recent developments in El Fasher have been particularly alarming according to the aid organisation.
Rapid Support Forces reportedly took control of the city and carried out a brutal hospital massacre over the weekend.
Hundreds of patients, families and health workers were killed in the hospital attack according to reports.
Many homes were raided while civilians were shot and thousands fled the city in fear.
More than 260,000 trapped people are struggling to survive with food, water and medicine running dangerously low. – Bernama
