Malaysia activates disaster control centres as Tropical Storm Senyar hits

Government mobilises over 2,000 personnel and activates state and district control centres following Tropical Storm Senyar landfall

PUTRAJAYA: The government has fully activated State Operations Control Centres across all 14 states and 198 District Operations Control Centres following Tropical Storm Senyar’s landfall.

The storm made landfall between Selangor and Negeri Sembilan at 12.30am, though it has since been downgraded to a low-pressure system.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi warned that wind convergence could still bring continuous rain to many Peninsular Malaysia areas within the next 24 hours.

As Central Disaster Management Committee chairman, he received comprehensive briefings from MetMalaysia, NADMA and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force regarding weather impacts.

“The Disaster Operations Control Centres at state and district levels ensure operational coordination, victim evacuation and information dissemination proceed without delay,” he said.

“This measure allows every development and need on the ground to be addressed in real time by the disaster management agency.”

The Malaysian Civil Defence Force has mobilised more than 2,000 personnel to patrol and monitor high-risk flood, storm and coastal wave areas.

Important assets including rescue boats, ambulances, 4×4 vehicles, generators, mobile water pumps and monitoring drones have been deployed for immediate operations.

The government has prepared 30,300 retort food packs, 88,701 C-Tent units and 31,480 victim food kits as initial emergency stocks at identified locations.

Ahmad Zahid reminded residents in affected areas to follow official warnings from MetMalaysia, NADMA, APM and authorities.

“The public is advised to avoid sea and coastal activities due to strong winds and high waves,” he said.

He urged people to keep emergency bags available and important documents stored safely.

“I also stress that the public should not spread unverified information that could cause confusion or panic.”

The government will continue monitoring the situation closely with all agencies on full alert.

“I myself will follow developments directly and ensure all assistance and necessary actions are implemented quickly for public safety,” he added. – Bernama
