Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says US military operation to capture Venezuela’s president violates international law and sets a dangerous precedent.
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned the United States military operation that seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
In a Facebook post, Anwar described the action as a clear violation of international law and an unlawful use of force against a sovereign state.
He said he was monitoring developments with grave concern, calling the seizure unprecedented in scope and nature.
Anwar stressed that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, must be released without delay.
He warned that the forcible removal of a sitting head of government through external intervention sets a dangerous precedent.
“It erodes fundamental restraints on the use of power between states and weakens the legal framework that underpins the international order,” he said.
Anwar stated that only the people of Venezuela should determine their own political future.
He argued that abrupt changes imposed through external force often bring more harm than good.
This is especially true for a country already grappling with prolonged economic hardship and deep social strain.
Anwar reiterated that Malaysia remains firm in upholding international law and respecting sovereignty.
He said these principles are essential foundations for peaceful relations between states.
“Constructive engagement, dialogue and de-escalation remain the most credible path,” he added.
This path should protect civilians and allow Venezuelans to pursue their legitimate aspirations without further harm.
According to US President Donald Trump, US forces captured Maduro and his wife early Saturday.
They were flown to New York, where they are expected to face federal charges.
Trump also announced that the US would administer Venezuela until a safe and proper transition is secured.
