Malaysia to explore nuclear energy in phased, science-based approach

Deputy PM Fadillah says Malaysia will explore nuclear energy through phased, science-based process to diversify energy mix and enhance security

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will explore nuclear energy through a phased and science-based approach to diversify its national energy mix and enhance reliability.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said this initiative forms part of Malaysia’s long-term commitment to strengthening energy security and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“This exploration is not a sudden shift, but a carefully phased, science-based process to diversify our energy mix and strengthen energy security and affordability,” he said when officiating the International Conference on Nuclear Energy (ICNE 2025).

Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said Malaysia’s nuclear exploration will be guided by three key principles: safety, transparency and sustainability.

Decisions will be made based on scientific data, public engagement and international best practices.

MyPower Corporation has been appointed as the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation to lead the country’s readiness for future nuclear development.

The appointment marks a key milestone in institutionalising Malaysia’s nuclear preparedness, with MyPower coordinating efforts across ministries, regulators and industry players.

MyPower’s responsibilities include strengthening institutional, legal and regulatory frameworks in line with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Milestone Approach.

The corporation will also conduct feasibility studies and engage the public to build trust.

“MyPower reflects Malaysia’s whole-of-government commitment to ensuring that any potential adoption of nuclear energy is orderly, transparent and in line with our MADANI values,” Fadillah added.

Nuclear energy exploration is embedded within the National Energy Transition Roadmap and complements the National Energy Policy 2022-2040.

Current initiatives include enhancing the Atomic Energy Licensing Board’s capacity and building technical expertise through global collaboration.

The government is also promoting transparent public dialogue on the safe use of nuclear energy. – Bernama

Cape EMS secures strategic capital to accelerate clean-energy growth in Johor–Singapore corridor

Cape EMS Bhd has been selected as one of the recipients of financing support under Maybank’s Johor–Singapore Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiative, aimed at driving cross-border trade and high-value manufacturing in the southern corridor. The financing — part of Maybank’s RM15 billion commitment for the JS-SEZ — will enable Cape EMS to expand its clean-energy and precision manufacturing capabilities, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV-related infrastructure, and smart-mobility solutions. This collaboration reinforces Cape EMS’s alignment with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the nation’s broader green-growth agenda.
