Malaysia’s 12MP initiatives drive GDP growth, economy ministry says

Over 170 initiatives under the 12th Malaysia Plan contributed to an estimated 5.2% annual GDP growth, with 2025 growth projected at 4.9%.

KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of more than 170 initiatives under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) has contributed to the nation’s estimated annual GDP growth of 5.2% between 2021 and 2025.

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said this achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of the MADANI Economy’s direction in navigating global uncertainties.

He stated that the growth also reflects the impact of targeted cash assistance programmes like Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR).

“This was a positive momentum that reflects Malaysia’s economic fundamentals, which remained resilient and competitive,” Akmal Nasrullah said in a statement.

He added that this year marks the start of the implementation phase for the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

The Ministry of Economy is committed to ensuring every initiative translates into tangible outcomes for the people.

The government is confident the country is on track to realise MADANI Economy aspirations through the 13MP.

It aims to achieve high-income nation status by 2030 under the plan themed ‘Redesigning Development’.

The ministry highlighted the Department of Statistics’ advance estimate of 5.7% GDP growth for the fourth quarter of 2025.

This figure serves as an early indication of the nation’s current economic performance.

Malaysia’s economy is projected to grow by 4.9% in 2025, exceeding the official forecast range of 4.0-4.8%.

This is despite facing various global challenges and an uncertain external environment.

The surge in economic activity in Q4 2025 points to stronger growth momentum.

This momentum is mainly driven by firmer domestic demand and improvements in the services and manufacturing sectors
