Malaysia’s influenza cases show slight decline in latest week

Influenza activity in Malaysia decreases in ME45, with ILI rates dropping to 7.32% while genomic sequencing shows no new virus mutations detected

PUTRAJAYA: Influenza activity in Malaysia recorded a slight decline during the 45th Epidemiological Week from November 2 to 8.

The Health Ministry reported decreased rates of Influenza-Like Illness consultations and positive cases compared to the previous week.

Monitoring was conducted through ILI and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections surveillance systems.

Outbreak reporting was managed via clusters coordinated by the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre.

“To date, genomic sequencing shows no new influenza virus mutations detected in Malaysia,” the ministry stated.

The ILI consultation rate dropped to 7.32% in ME45/2025 from 8.34% in the previous week.

Overall ILI activity in 2025 remains within the moderate range according to ministry data.

A total of 46 influenza clusters were recorded in ME45/2025, slightly higher than the 43 reported the previous week.

Private homes continued to account for the most clusters, followed by schools, kindergartens and childcare centres.

The ministry reminded the public to avoid public places when experiencing symptoms.

They advised wearing face masks when experiencing cough or cold symptoms.

Frequent handwashing and proper cough etiquette were also recommended as preventive measures.

“Most individuals infected with the influenza virus recover fully within a few days to a week,” the ministry added.

The infection can cause serious complications among high-risk groups including children, the elderly and those with chronic health conditions.

High-risk individuals are advised to seek early examination and treatment at nearby healthcare facilities. – Bernama
