MAPIM seeks MACC guidance on donation fund governance

The Malaysian Islamic Organisations Consultative Council met the MACC to strengthen its financial governance and internal controls for managing public donations.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Islamic Organisations Consultative Council (MAPIM) has sought guidance from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to enhance the governance of its donation funds.

A meeting was held yesterday where MAPIM discussed improving its financial and procurement systems.

MACC Kuala Lumpur director Mohamad Zakkuan Talib (pic) stated the commission’s role extends beyond investigation to include anti-corruption education.

He warned that institutions managing public donations face risks without robust internal controls.

“Weaknesses in internal control systems could create opportunities for misuse of funds, including risks of nepotism or conflicts of interest in procurement and project implementation,” he said.

He added that such situations could damage an institution’s reputation and public trust.

The MACC outlined the need for strong internal mechanisms like checks and balances and segregation of duties.

It emphasised that financial decisions should require board or independent committee approval.

MAPIM president Mohd Azmi Abd Hamid led the delegation seeking MACC’s assistance.

He stated the organisation aims to boost anti-corruption awareness among its management and staff.

MAPIM’s income comes from financing, public donations, and government or corporate allocations.

Mohd Azmi said strengthening governance is essential to maintain public trust and ensure responsible fund management.
