MBPP reviews pet-friendly mall concept at Gurney Paragon

Penang council assesses Gurney Paragon’s pet-friendly mall plan, proposing stricter rules on days, weight and hygiene amid public interest and sensitivity concerns.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council is reviewing the suitability of a ‘Pet Friendly Mall’ concept at Gurney Paragon Mall.

This follows concerns regarding Islamic sensitivities and broader public interests.

A site visit was conducted today, attended by the council’s mayor and representatives.

Discussions with mall management involved reviewing current house rules and exploring enhanced control measures.

Agreed measures include installing clearer signage in pet-friendly lift areas.

A maximum pet weight of 15 kg and mandatory use of a stroller or carrier at all times were also set.

Pet access will be restricted to only Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Security controls will be strengthened to ensure full compliance with all conditions.

Pet owners will be required to use special diapers and only use designated lifts.

They must also ensure proper disposal of animal waste.

MBPP emphasised that enforcing the house rules is the shopping complex management’s responsibility.

Visitors are urged to maintain public order and hygiene out of consideration for societal sensitivities.

“Currently, the council does not have a specific bylaw regarding permission for pets in shopping complexes,” the statement said.

It added the council is “now reviewing the feasibility of its implementation while taking into account public interest and the harmony of our multi-racial society.”
