MCMC seizes over 10,000 uncertified communication devices worth RM1 million in Selangor, targeting sales via e-commerce and social media.
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has seized 10,112 units of suspected unauthorised communication devices, valued at an estimated RM1 million.
The operation, dubbed ‘Op Optik’, was conducted in Klang and Petaling Jaya, Selangor, based on intelligence from a collaboration with SIRIM.
A total of 69 officers participated in the 19-hour operation targeting a company suspected of selling uncertified equipment.
“Among the items seized were wireless closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and various operational support equipment, such as computers, printers, mobile phones, and WiFi routers,” MCMC said in a statement.
The commission found the devices were marketed and sold through several e-commerce platforms and social media channels.
Forty individuals were initially questioned, with nine Notices of Attendance issued to key personnel including the company director and operations manager.
MCMC warned that unauthorised devices pose consumer safety risks as they fail to meet required technical standards.
“They can disrupt service networks, degrade service quality, and compromise the integrity of the local market,” the commission said.
The case is being investigated under Regulation 16 of the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000.
This regulation carries a maximum penalty of a RM300,000 fine, imprisonment of up to three years, or both.
MCMC emphasised that enforcement actions will continue and intensify to curb such sales and protect consumer interests.
