Melaka schools boost security with police patrols and metal detectors

Melaka Education Department and police enhance school safety with patrols, SOP enforcement, metal detectors and safety literacy programmes

MELAKA: The Melaka Education Department is intensifying security measures in partnership with the Royal Malaysia Police to safeguard students in school zones.

State Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman said key actions include stricter enforcement of school safety SOPs and more police patrols in high-risk locations.

Schools are also being bolstered through emergency preparedness training and teacher safety coordinator teams.

Improvements to incident recording and reporting systems are also being implemented.

“Efforts to enhance students’ safety literacy and to increase community involvement are also a priority,” Rahmad stated.

He emphasised that every school must conduct the School Safety Rating assessment periodically each year.

Rahmad was responding to a query from Dr Mohd Aleef Yusof regarding measures to keep Melaka schools safe for children.

He noted that social media influence and easy internet access are factors in crime cases involving students.

To curb technology misuse, the ministry enforces a policy prohibiting students from bringing mobile phones to school.

This aims to reduce risks like unauthorised recordings and exposure to inappropriate content.

“Several schools have introduced the use of metal detectors at their entrances,” he added.

The detectors allow efficient identification of phones without physical checks that may cause student discomfort. – Bernama
