Modest lock-up attire for women detainees to be raised in talks

Deputy minister Marhamah Rosli says proposal for better syariah-compliant lock-up attire for women detainees will be discussed in inter-ministry talks.

KOTA BHARU: A proposal to improve lock-up attire for women detainees to meet syariah requirements on modesty better will be raised through inter-ministry discussions, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Marhamah Rosli said today.

She said compliance with Islamic requirements on covering aurat was a religious obligation that should not be compromised.

“Under any circumstances, even in difficult situations, aurat and the syariat of Allah must be upheld. That is the stand of the religious affairs side,” she told reporters after officiating the Little Haj by Little Caliphs programme here.

Marhamah said matters involving police stations and lock-ups came under the jurisdiction of other ministries and agencies, and would therefore require engagement with the relevant parties.

“God willing, we will discuss it for improvements. Matters that bring benefit will always be proposed and considered,” she said.

The issue arose after some quarters questioned the attire worn by a female teacher during a remand process on April 13 in connection with a case involving a student collision incident, saying it did not fully cover aurat.
