The Education Ministry assures all six-year-olds opting for early Year One entry will be placed, with maximum preparations underway for the 2027 policy shift.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Education has guaranteed there will be no rejection of enrolment applications for six-year-old children opting to enter Year One beginning in 2027.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said comprehensive preparations are being carried out based on nationwide mapping of school capacity and infrastructure.
She said this accounts for the anticipated strong response from parents to the optional early entry policy.
“Although it is optional, our preparations are at the maximum level… so there will be no rejection,” she said in the Dewan Rakyat.
“Those who are accepted and those who apply will be enrolled.”
Fadhlina added that parents choosing this path are not required to register their children for preschool, as the MOE has guaranteed placement.
The early entry policy was announced as a transformative leap in national education to be implemented from 2027.
It aims to strengthen pupils’ foundational literacy and numeracy skills at the initial stage of schooling.
Fadhlina said the policy is driven by four key considerations.
These are global education practices, increasing early enrolment, the country’s demographic shift, and the need to develop high-quality human capital.
She clarified that the policy will not alter the existing schooling structure.
Pupils will continue to undergo six years of primary education and five years of secondary education.
To ensure infrastructure readiness, MOE will optimise existing facilities and enhance school capacity.
This includes implementing double sessions in selected areas and converting special-purpose rooms into additional classrooms if necessary.
“At the MOE level, we are already able to anticipate areas that will become focal points,” she said.
The ministry’s process is currently focused on the overall preparation of school capacity and infrastructure.
