MOH revokes Uyana Tone Up Night Cream notification after it’s found to contain mercury and scheduled poisons.
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Health (MOH) has revoked the product notification for Uyana Tone Up Night Cream after it was found to contain scheduled poisons and mercury, making it illegal for sale in the country.
The ministry stated that mercury is banned in cosmetics because it can be absorbed into the body, potentially causing damage to the kidneys and nervous system.
“It can also affect the brain development of young children or unborn babies. Mercury may additionally cause rashes, irritation, and other skin changes,” it said in a statement today.
The MOH urged the public to avoid purchasing or using the product.
“Sellers and distributors of this cosmetic product must immediately cease its sale and distribution,” it said, stressing that the sale and distribution of the product violates the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
Individuals found guilty under the regulations may face a maximum fine of RM25,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both for a first offence, and a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both for subsequent offences.
It added that companies found guilty may face fines of up to RM50,000 for a first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
