Motorcyclist killed in Melaka crash involving microsleep driver

A motorcyclist died and five were injured after a driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing a multi-vehicle collision at a Melaka intersection.

MELAKA: A motorcyclist was killed and five others injured in a multi-vehicle accident at the Padang Jambu traffic light intersection.

The incident involved three motorcycles and three cars.

Melaka Tengah District Police Chief Christopher Patit said the 44-year-old victim, Mohd Shahrol Anuar Md Roby, died at the scene from severe injuries.

Initial investigations suggest the driver of a Perodua Myvi momentarily fell asleep or experienced microsleep.

This caused the vehicle to veer into the opposite lane and crash into several vehicles stopped at the traffic light.

“The victim, who was riding a Honda EX5 motorcycle, sustained serious injuries and was confirmed dead at the location,” said Patit.

Two other motorcyclists, both aged 25, sustained injuries to their right legs.

The driver of a Proton Saga, a 48-year-old woman, suffered forehead injuries and shoulder pain.

The driver of a BMW was unharmed, while the Myvi driver sustained only elbow abrasions.

Breathalyzer and drug tests on the 35-year-old Myvi driver returned negative results.

Police have taken blood samples for toxicology testing and obtained dashcam footage from a witness.

The victim’s body has been sent to Melaka Hospital for a post-mortem.

All vehicles involved have been taken to Malim Police Station before being sent to Puspakom for inspection.

The Myvi driver will be brought to court for a remand application.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
