A humanitarian NGO secretary is remanded for three days over alleged abuse of power and misappropriation of RM4.2 million in public donations.
KUALA LUMPUR: A secretary of a non-governmental organisation involved in Gaza humanitarian work has been remanded for three days. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating allegations of abuse of power and misappropriation of approximately RM4.2 million.
Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah issued the remand order at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court. The suspect, a man in his 40s, was arrested yesterday while giving a statement at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
Initial investigations found the suspect, who also owns a food company, allegedly approved and transferred the NGO’s funds into two other company accounts. The funds were purportedly transferred for investment purposes where individuals in the NGO’s management are believed to have interests.
The alleged acts were committed between 2022 and 2024. The investigation is focusing on the element of embezzlement of public funds as the NGO received public donations for its humanitarian missions.
MACC Anti-Money Laundering Division director Datuk Norhaizam Muhammad confirmed the arrest. The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
